Quranic & prophetic basis
Al-Tawbah 9:103 · The obligation
"Take from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them increase, and invoke [Allah's blessings] upon them. Indeed, your invocations are reassurance for them. And Allah is Hearing and Knowing."
Al-Tawbah 9:60 · The eight recipients
"Zakah expenditures are only for the poor and for the needy and for those employed to collect [zakah] and for bringing hearts together [for Islam] and for freeing captives and for those in debt and for the cause of Allah and for the [stranded] traveler — an obligation imposed by Allah. And Allah is Knowing and Wise."
Hadith · The nisab threshold
"There is no zakat on less than five awaq [200 dirhams of silver, equivalent to ~595 g]."
Sahih al-Bukhari 1405 · Sahih Muslim 979
Hadith, The 2.5% rate
"In every forty dirhams, one dirham is due [= 2.5%]. Nothing is payable until the wealth reaches two hundred dirhams, at which point five dirhams are due."
Abu Dawud 1574 · al-Nasa'i 2449 · ⚠️ Verify with a scholar
Out of scope, consult a scholar. This tool covers zakat al-mal on cash, gold, silver, receivables, business inventory, and trade investments. Agricultural produce (ushr), livestock, zakat al-Fitr, pensions, and long-term shares follow different rules and should be reviewed with a scholar.
